WHAT COOKIES ARE?
Cookies are short text files sent by the website to the user terminal (usually to the browser), where they are stored to be then transmitted to the website at the following user’s visit. A cookie can not refer to any other data from the HDD of the user nor transmit computer viruses or acquire email addresses. Each cookie is unique for the user’s web browser. Some cookies functions can be required to other technologies. In the present disclosure the “cookie” term means both so called cookies and similar technologies.
COOKIES TYPE
Cookies can be of first or third part, meaning for “first part” cookies which report the website as domain, while “third part” means cookies related to external domains.
Cookies of third part are necessarily installed by an external subject always defined as “third part” not managed by the website. These subjects can eventually install also cookies of first part, saving on the website domain their own cookies.
Another type of cookies are the so called “Flash Cookies” (Local Shared Objects) used within Adobe Flash Player to provide some contents, such as video clip or animations to remember settings and preferences. Flash cookies are registered on the device but they are managed through a different interface respect to that provided by the used browser.
COOKIES KIND
Concerning the cookies kind, there are different types:

Technical cookies

Technical cookies are used only to carry out the transmission of a communication on a network of electronic communication or at the necessary extent to the service provider of the information company explicitly required by the subscriber or the user to provide this service” (compare art. 122, paragraph 1 of the Code).

They are not used for further aims and they are usually installed directly by the holder or the website manager. They can be divided in:

  • surfing or session cookies which guarantee the normal surfing and the use of the website (allowing, for example, a purchasing or the log in to enter to reserved areas); they are needed for the correct functioning of the website;
  • analytics cookies similar to technical cookies whereas they are used directly to the website manager to collect information, in an aggregate form, about the users number and on how they visit the website to improve the website performance;
  • operation cookies which allow the user the surfing in function of a series of selected criteria (for example, the language, the selected products for the purchase) to improve the service provided by it. To install these cookies it is not required the previous consensus of users (more information in the below paragraph on Cookies management).


Profiling cookies

Profiling cookies are aimed at creating profiles related to the user and they are used to send advertisement messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user during the surfing.
To use the profiling cookies it is requested the consensus of user. According to the disposition (more information in the below paragraph on Cookies management), the user can authorize or deny the consensus for the cookies’ installation through options provided in the section “Cookies management”.
In case of cookies of third parts, the website does not have a direct control of the single cookies and it can not control them (it can not neither directly install them nor delete them). However you can manage these cookies through the browser settings (please follow instructions provided later) or websites indicated in the section “Cookies management”.
Therefore the user is invited to check on the website the third part indicated in the table reported below.

Cookies duration

Cookies have a duration established by the expiration date (or by a specific action such as the closure of the browser) set up during the installation.

Cookies can be:

  • session cookies: they are used to register temporary information and they allow to connect the actions taken during a specific session and they are deleted from the computer at the browser closure;
  • persistent cookies: they are used to register information, for example the name and the access password to avoid that the user has to type them again each time he visits a specific website. These are saved in the computer also after the browser closure.

How disable/delete cookies through the setting of browser

Chrome

  1. Run the browser Chrome
  2. Click on the menu present in the browser toolbar next to the url insertion window for the surfing
  3. Select Settings
  4. Click on Show Advanced Settings
  5. In the “Privacy” section click on “Contents settings” button
  6. In the “Cookies” section it is possible modify the following settings related to cookies:
    • permit the data saving locally;
    • modify local data only until the browser closure;
    • prevent to websites to set cookies;
    • block cookies of third parties and website data;
    • manage exceptions for some websites;
    • delete one or all cookies.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Run Mozilla Firefox;
  2. Click on the menu present in the browser toolbar next to the url insertion window for the surfing;
  3. Select Settings
  4. Select Privacy panel
  5. Click on Show Advanced Settings
  6. In the “Privacy” section click on “Contents settings” button
  7. In the “Tracking” section it is possible to modify the following settings related to cookies:
    • Require to websites to not make any tracking;
    • Communicate to websites the availability to be tracked;
    • Not communicate any preference related to the personal data tracking
  8. Chronology” it is possible:
    • Firefox closure or ask each time)
    • Remove singles stored cookies.

Internet Explorer

  1. Run Internet Explorer
  2. Click on Tools button and choose Internet Options
  3. Click on Privacy fiche and in the Settings section modify the slider in function of the desired action for cookies:
    • Block all cookies
    • Permit all cookies
    • Select websites from which to obtain cookies: move the cursor in an intermediary position to not block or permit all cookies, click on Websites, in the bok Website Address insert a website and then click on
    • Block or Permit.

Safari 6

  1. Run Safari 6
  2. Click on Safari, select Preferences and click on Privacy
  3. In the section Block Cookies, specify how Safari has to accept cookies from websites

To see what websites register cookies, click on Details

 

Safari iOS (dispositivi mobile)

  1. Run Safari iOS
  2. Touch on Settings and then on Safari 3. Touch on Block Cookies and choose between the several options: “Never”, “Of third parties and advertisers” or “Always”
  3. To delete all cookies stored by Safari, touch on Settings, then on Safari and finally on Delete Cookies and data

Opera

  1. Run Opera
  2. Click on Preferences then on Advanced and finally on Cookies
  3. Select one of the following options:
    • accept all cookies
    • accept cookies only from the website that you visit: cookies of third parties and those sent by a different domain from that you are visiting will be refused
    • never accept cookies: all cookies are never saved.
